Typographic rant of the day.

Some fonts have hyphens that slant up. I'm rather fond of them, myself.
I admit, I'm lazy when I type, and rather than type an em-dash, I'll type two hyphens and replace them later.

However, in a book I'm reading right now, they're using double-hyphens, with slanty hyphens. And standard em-dashes.

Arrgghh!!!

Without invitation to do so, I must whole-heartedly agree with the rant.
When you say "standard em-dashes," I must assume that you mean there are no spaces astride..?

Indeed, there are not.
Agh! I just went to check, and there's a single word with an em-dash on one side and the slanty double hyphen on the other. How can anyone not see it! ArrgghhH!! And it's a book on spiritual peace. But it enrages me! Maybe it's a lesson to typesetters to release the need for perfection.

If you want to get technical, it's self-published non-fiction. Not that the guy doesn't know what he's talking about, but he's putting out books for his own foundation. Aggh! It lists who did what. Proofreading -- Kate Weibel. Printing and Post Porduction... (sic) Agghh!! Kate, check the entire book, not just the manuscript!! I suppose we can lay that little slip at Baruch Khovov's feet. He did the layout.

Of course, I have yet to break a few of my *designer* co-workers of using hyphens for everything (not even double hyphens). TEH EM-DASH, LET ME SHOW YOU IT.
