Just got off the train from Oregon. There was much traveling today. Driving, walking, bussing, driving, training, bussing and just a little more walking. There were also visits with [livejournal.com profile] calendula_witch, whose gorgeous house I've agreed to housesit for two weeks. So now my near future schedule looks like this:

Now through Friday: Job hunt in Bellingham.

Saturday: chill and possibly cross off some of my "stuff I've always meant to do in Bellingham" list. Probably this means walking down to Happy Valley to visit the Donovan Erratic. Yes, I'll walk across town to look at an interesting rock. It's from Jackass Mountain!

Sunday: go to parents house

8/23-8/24: backpacking with Dad and friends.

8/25: Go to Portland to take up housesitting and orchid-watering duties.

9/9: End housesitting duties.

9/11: Dad's birthday party, also in Portland. Hopefully come back north with parents...

And then I'll start my job-hunting tour of Puget Sound. I was a little torn when [livejournal.com profile] calendula_witch extended her invitation, because it took place when I was hoping to be couch-surfing. But I'd be stupid to turn down a chance to live my near-ideal--all alone in a big fancy house surrounded by books. Maybe this means I'm more likely to get a job in and move to Portland, I don't know.

(And sheesh, how many of my writer friends who I'd want to hang out with in Portland are going to be off at Worldcon? :-P )

Plan.

I think I have a plan.
I'm in the Portland area right now, lounging in the shade in a friend's backyard, in 93 degree heat (21% humidity), making up for the fact that the sauna in Whistler was a piece of crap. I've done some relaxing, some job hunting. Read some comic books and just got in some time at the pool, helping my friends show their babies swimming for the first time. I think I'll stick around a couple more days, then go into Portland proper to visit friends and family.

(Hey, Portland friends! Do you want to see me?)

Then, I'll head back to Bellingham for a week or so, canvassing town with resumes. I've got a doctor's appointment on Thursday, a friend in town on Saturday. When I'm done with that, I'll hit the road. I'll print out as many resumes as I can carry, and start visiting towns on the train and bus lines. At least, towns with friends I can crash with. (I think this is important, because I'd rather not move to a place where I don't know anyone.) Maybe I could find some campgrounds, though. That could be cool. I'll spend a day or so in each town, checking out the print shops.
This kind of road trip is the sort of thing I've always wanted to do, anyway. So why the hell not?

So who'd be up for letting me crash on their couch for a night? I'm quiet and can do dishes. I've got Seattle, North Kitsap and maybe Mt Vernon covered. (dammit, my main Everett contact just moved to Illinois. :-( )

I don't know how long this epic journey will take, but maybe I'll end up in Portland in time for my next visit, in the middle of September for my dad's 70th birthday.
(Portland's last on my list. I don't think I want to try any farther south, though Eugene is very vaguely tempting.)
