Today went pretty well, I don't feel quite so burned out. I went to an early morning koffee klatch, where there was a manageable number of people. Same at dinner. I got to get to know [livejournal.com profile] mareklamo better, and met [livejournal.com profile] jkling.
I met both my Norwescon goals, which was to buy Spin for my dad, and meet [livejournal.com profile] mdhenry, who's just as awesome as he seems in his blog. We talked about black comedies, and realized we couldn't remember the titles of any, though we knew which ones we were talking about.

One of the things my critique did for me was to point out glaring problems I really should have noticed, and kind of did, but didn't appreciate. I knew my heroine needed fixing, and I got some good, concrete ideas on fixing a problem I've already made a lot of progress on. But the worst problem, I think, was that my villain is flat as a pancake. I really didn't give him any backstory beyond his unusual age. Now, of course, I'm like, "why the hell did I let myself get away with that?" So I spent my down time scribbling about him in a notebook, and having a lot of fun with it.

Of course, I'm kicking myself for not entering in vital worldbuilding data into Mori. I need to know the dates the different Hellgates opened up, and it's all written in a random notebook at home somewhere. ~>:(

Fluffy pain

Over the weekend, while stuck in a bus and relaxing on a train, I read a book so fluffy, it made my head hurt. The book started out promising, but soon the opposition showed up and proved to be cartoon cutouts. Not even cartoons, really, more like shadows of cartoons, as if the author was saying, "You know those cartoonish stereotypes? Imagine them right here." I kept reading until I was certain we'd never be told why these guys were Evil, then skimmed to make sure my predictions were correct. (they essentially were). And then I pulled out my laptop and started messing with The Blood Rose Devouring, because that book made me feel good about myself.

So I'll spend the next couple days determining where I can slip in the little character fixes I know it needs, then start sending it to agents. All right, all right, when I'm done with the Norwescon workshop, I'll start sending it out.
