How Girl Guides Helped Win the War.-- Why wasn't being a Girl Scout this awesome? We learned how to make divinity, and that's about all I remember.
(Granted, I seem to remember all the badges required you to organize people and get up and talk in front of them. This, to say the least, was not my greatest strength, and I never actually received any instruction in how to overcome my shyness. I just got a lot of, "why haven't you earned any badges?" Needless to say, I was only a Girl Scout for a year. Then again, they never taught us to make telegraphs. I learned all the cool stuff from my uncles' old Boy Scout Handbook.)

Date: 2010-08-30 10:16 pm (UTC)Still, though, here are some of the things the girls in my troop learned how to do:
* Hiking, compass work, orienteering, using maps, drawing their own maps
* Basic first aid and CPR -- they weren't allowed to come camping with us until they passed their first aid test
* Pregnancy and STD prevention (yes, there used to be a GS badge for this), plus overall women's preventive health care (still is a badge for this)
* Sewing -- enough hand sewing skills to sew on their own badges, and to make their own zombie dolls
* Conflict resolution skills, both for personal use and as peer mediators, how to negotiate with adults
* How to interact with the elderly, homeless, and mentally ill without freaking out
* Lots of science experiments
* Identifying plants, birds, and insects
* Swimming, water safety, canoeing
* Identifying constellations

Date: 2010-09-02 10:35 pm (UTC)I think that the death of girl scouts as bad-assery-training is due to the women's lib movement no longer resultingin people being beaten to death. No more world war too, so girl's don't have to be able to take care of themselves (sarcasm)
Something about INTENSE cirumstances cause people to strive, when they get comfortable well... that may be where the phrase 'dont get too comfortable' comes from.
