San Francisco childhoods?

Hey, I'm looking for background details for a character who grew up in the San Francisco area. (Could be the Bay Area in general. I'm not picky.) If you grew up there, what fun little things did you do as a kid that you look back on with nostalgia? (And don't mind potentially being attached to an imaginary 13-year-old in my novel.)

My grandpa used to ditch school and go swimming in the Bay, right under the Golden Gate Bridge. (This was in the 30s.) Apparently the undertows are nasty and sucked him right out to sea once. Or so he tells me.
