So, does anyone here know anything about non-genre short story markets? I only know about like, The New Yorker, and maybe Glimmer Train. I'm sure I can go to the library and read some to get a handle on tone and content, but what about the other stuff? I know that with sf, there's "The Big Three"--F&SF, Asimov's and Analog, and I know that Clarkesworld and Fantasy have super fast turnaround times.
What's worth submitting to?
Duotrope's got a huge list of names, but I'm interested in stuff like reputations and how friendly they are to newbies.

Just look on Duotrope.com. They'll give you pay rates, response times, etc. They only thing they can't directly report is "cred", but you can often get that off the internet.

There's a lot of markets out there, though, and Duotrope can only help me sift out a few. Hence, my questioning the internet. Starting here on LJ is easiest, with people I trust.

Well, I'm pretty new to literary stuff, too, but New Pages (http://www.newpages.com/literary-magazines/) has some info.

Tin House is an awesome literary magazine, respected, paying. They were kind enough to reject me in a timely fashion (90 days or so, which I'm under the impression is decent for literary magazines).

StoryQuarterly and TriQuarterly both pay. But response times for lit markets are crap, which is why most of them take simultaneous submissions. There are a lot of contests which pay a thousand or more, but you have to pay to enter most. Glimmer Train holds some kind of contest every month.

A general rule of thumb is that anything with "review" in the title doesn't pay.

Basically, you publish in Reviews to build your CV and get a job teaching Creative Writing. And for the love of literature. Too bad I hate literature.

Heh. I was at the library and read a little bit of the Bellingham Review. Saw your name in there.
I just sent it to Glimmer Train. Their current category is "Family Matters," and I figured I might as well. It sure pays well on the long chance it wins.
