I thought I was reading the first book of the Illuminatus! Trilogy. I was excited about it, and telling everyone about the awesome opening. I'm actually only vaguely familiar with the series, but I thought it was more modern. The thing I read was in 1770 Naples. I figured the next book took place closer to the present. So I finish it, go to look up the name of the next book, and realize I've read this instead of this.

Well, it was an awesome book, anyway.

The Illuminatus! trilogy is probably no where near as good as that book is, based on your reactions. It's definitely worth reading, but it will strive to disappoint you.

It's chalk full of cultural references and great scenes.

But for me, I'd describe it as maybe having the prose of the Wild Card series (or some kind of fan fic), just a bit more continuity than Catch 22, and the level of maturity of the movie Top Secret. And there's one scene in the third book that is just so damned awkward.

If you go into it understanding that, you'll probably thoroughly enjoy the books!

Mind you, I read them in middle school, so it's been a while.

So... this is like a critic's time machine, with a book review from the past!
