Webcomic recommendations
Jan. 5th, 2009 08:07 pmOkay, we're going to see if I can read me some webcomics.
Right now, aside from the comics of my friends, I'm reading Metanoia and Kagerou (from friends of friends!)
So I'm looking for recommendations. Go wild. I'm curious to see what you read.

Date: 2009-01-06 05:30 am (UTC)Narbonic (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/shaenongarrity/narbonic/series.php) is one of my all time favorite stories in any genre or medium, and it's finished, so it's just a read-through, not an ongoing commitment. Shaenon's new project, Skin Horse (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/shaenongarrity/skinhorse/series.php), is pretty awesome as well. Both center around Mad Science, and are just great.
Girl Genius (http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php) is another one of the major Mad Science Comics online. More steampunk than modern-era Mad Science. I rather like the art, as well.
XKCD (http://xkcd.com/) is pretty much the ultimate geek webcomic at the moment. Mostly random nerdy jokes, as opposed to the more story driven nature of the comics above. Frequently both hilarious and quotable.
Questionable Content (http://www.questionablecontent.net/) is pretty much a slice of life comic in a world somewhat stranger than ours, but mostly similar. It's mostly about a bunch of 20-somethings either hanging out in or working in Coffee Shops. Everyone I've gotten to read it has loved it.
Something Positive (http://www.somethingpositive.net/) is one of the darkest strips on my reading list. A lot of people really have trouble with this one, but I really like it. It's also a slice of life strip about a bunch of 20-somethings in a world slightly stranger than ours, but there the resemblance ends. If you find the first week or so amusing, you'll probably like the rest.
Paradigm Shift (http://www.dynamanga.net/ps/index.html) is a beautifully drawn werewolf story set in Chicago. Great writing, great art, great characters. The only problem is that it takes Dirk quite a while to put together, so it only updates once a week.
Antagonist (http://antagonist.swimtrunkstudio.com/index.php) isn't really in the same league as any of the others I've included here, but it's still quite fun, and the concept is just great. It's a look at a bunch of classic Tropes from the viewpoints of a Villain and a Hench. Unfortunately, it usually only gets a page or two each month, but I still make a point of going back every now and then to check it out.
All 45 comics that I read at least semi-regularly are listed in my del.icio.us (http://delicious.com/westrider).

Date: 2009-01-06 04:20 pm (UTC)A Softer World (http://www.asofterworld.com/). Three-panel strips based on polaroid photos. Alternately heartbreaking and hilarious.
Wigu (http://www.wigu.com/). A bizarre story about a boy and his pals from Butter Dimension 360. Absurdist and quirky.
Dinosaur Comics (http://www.qwantz.com/). Sui generis, hard to describe. It has dinosaurs who talk about things? Read a few and you'll figure out whether you like it.
And additional votes for XKCD and Scary Go Round (mentioned by others).
A general point about webcomics: don't just read what's on the front page. Web comics, like everything else, has good days and bad days. Be sure to read a decent sample from the archives, and if it's a story-based comic, try to read an entire arc to get a good feel for what the comic is like.
