[livejournal.com profile] vylar_kaftan has some great suggestions on what you can do to help your community without donating a penny.

There are so many different things you can volunteer for, no matter your skills or personality type. Anti-social like me? I worked for over three years doing paperwork for the domestic violence rep in the prosecutor's office. Doing my part to help justice, domestic violence victims, and keep down the cost of government.

One thing opponents of government-provided services often suggest is that the government shouldn't being doing the work private charities are intended for. But any charity will tell you their resources are few and far between. But even in a perfect social democracy, we still need to help each other on a private level.
Think about all the organizations that need volunteers in your community. Try to imagine what your community would be like if suddenly, all those groups had all the resources they needed. Even in the most economically downturned areas, there could be parks and trails. Our government officials can focus their attentions to more important things. (Seriously, why aren't the libertarians and republican's constantly beating the drum of volunteering? If you don't want the government to provide a service, go do it yourself, dammit.)
