I was a bit worried that Christmas might be like my high school reunion, where I sat back and marveled at how I had nothing in common with those people. But that's not the case here. My cousin and I went for a long walk and talked about life and ourselves; we ate burritoes and shared insights about our parents having been raised by a widow.

Cousin Marcie's oldest daughter, 3-year-old Shay (who I keep wanting to call Shai X( ) reminds me of myself as a child. She's a total pink princess. She refuses to wear pants, and always walks on her tiptoes. When told to do a "funky dance" in a game, she did some graceful sorta-ballet moves. 18 month old Neko (pronounced Nee-ko) is dextrous and will put the cap back on a pen and pick all the money and credit cards out of her grandma's wallet.
Cousin Murray's 3-week old Gwen is small, squooshy and blotchy.

Christmas is going great, except that I can't sit down well due to the pilonidal cyst on my tailbone. I've had it a long time, but never thought about it. it rarely bugs me. But now it's swelled up big (I made the mistake of looking at it earlier.) Never been this bad. In January, I will at long last take advantage of my insurance and start digging through my $500 premium. I've been fussing about money, but I realize that I can and will receive help from my dad, and getting an infected blob of pus and hair rug out of your backside is not a frivolous thing. Yes, I'm pretty sure this is the price for having my magnificently thick head of hair. I've got magnificently thick hair everywhere.

I hope it explodes! I've looked up stuff on it, and it looks like I just need some antibiotics. Surgery and recovery are a pain in the ass (literally) and since I only have severe flare-ups once every what, seven years? I can probably get by with the occasional antibiotic round.

It just sucks because I don't want to go to the emergency room, but everything will be closed for Christmas. I think I'm just going to have to tough it out (oh, god, the airplane!) until I get home tomorrow.

Does standing up help? If you don't have an aisle seat on the way back, go to the counter when you get to the airport and ask if you can have one. They probably will, especially if you discretely explain that it is a health issue.

Actually even without that. One thing I have learned from my mother is that airport and hotel people are insanely accommodating if it's possible.

That's probably a good idea. Alternating sitting and standing is nice.
