Hey, the katydid just dropped onto my bed. I've been watching it on my ceiling, and had wondered where it went. Eee... it has red eyes! And antennae longer than it's body. There, I put it outside. Last time a katydid came in my room, it was to die in a breeched attempt at shedding it's skin.

Speaking of death...

I'm researching the little details I need to fill in my book. I need the name of a gun a hitman would use. Maybe he has several guns, one for hits and one for wearing everyday. I don't even need a lot of details, just a name for him to call the damn thing(s), because I don't think he'd think "the gun." But I don't want to pick a random handgun, since I know crap about them.

I've poked around the morass that is the Nano forums, to no avail.

The Beretta M9 is evil and not to be used unless you specifically want to use it because a lot of cops do. I've watched the bloody things jam three rounds in a row, which is a level of unreliability that I'd find utterly unacceptable if my life depended on it.

I've heard very mixed things about the Desert Eagle. Some people love it but a lot of people complain that its aim is rather loosey-goosey.

The wikipedia entry covers most of my concerns with the M9. If you're interested in a gun that's used by the US military, you might also look at the P226 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIG_P226), which has a more comfy grip than the Glock while still being solid and reliable.

i've heard the poor functioning of many M9s is due to shitty cheap manufacturing because so many of them are made and not a problem with the actual design of the gun.

I absolutely believe this might be true. There's nothing in looking at or handling the M9 that says it should be an unreliable gun when compared to the P226 or the Glock 9mm (granting that my knowledge of firearms design is almost nil).

If I were a hitman...

I'd carry a Glock (http://www.glock.com/) 10mm for day-to-day use. You know, the gun I have with me when I go out to get milk or whatever. The high-capacity clip means I don't have to worry about running out of ammo under normal circumstances, the composite frame keeps it light. (Common mistakes by writers talking about Glocks: the safety is actually on the trigger so you don't "thumb the safety" unless you are doing something markedly stupid or strange; parts of the frame *are* made of plastic but there's still more than enough metal in the piece to set off a metal detector or send iron-adverse elves into fits.)

For actual hits, unless there was a reason to get close-in or there are specific needs for the hit (eg, I know he'll be in an armored car) in which case I'd have to opt for some sort of "disposable" (meaning, I don't mind dropping it in a storm sewer) or specific weapon, a rifle chambered for .30.06 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield) is a good choice. As you can see from the wiki entry, there are a variety of options there; you'd want to do a little research for what your precise hitman would like.

Yup. I was going to suggest a Glock.

Awesome, thanks! That's exactly what I'm looking for. And your above comment is exactly why I'm asking. The Beretta is the first name that popped into my head, but I'm all, "heck, that could be a lousy gun!"
