Oh yeah. I discovered (via Red Dwarf) that Brits actually do pronounce "whinge" as it looks. So whine and whinge really are two completely different words, not just different spellings. Apologies to all my Commonwealth critique partners, upon whom I have imposed my ignorant America-centrism over the years.

But Jesus, that bugs the heck out of me.

They have the same meaning?

My definition of "whinge" was always something like to bounce off of or smack as in

"Jason whinged the rock off Tommy's forehead."

From what I'm gathering over on Making Light (where they're discussing this issue) "Whinge" means to complain, while "whine" is a sound made by non-human things (eg, an engine whine)

Ah "Red Dwarf"...

...it teaches so much, and asks so little in return accept your attention. I mean I would have never learned that Hermann Goering was a cross-dresser had it not been mentioned in 2 or 3 episodes nor would I have learned about, um...fictional time-travel mechanics! Bless you Bob Grant and Doug Naylor.

well, at least whilst and while are not so weird. I like whilst, myself. It rocks. LOL.

I have had to get used to phrases such as "I was sat on the bench waiting..."

I am very glad my boyfriend chose to learn American English rather than Brit, though we both play with Brit. :)

Definitely different words - though cause I just use them, I probably couldn't point out the difference :P You don't whinge in the US? Maybe you moan on a different level :D
