May. 15th, 2007 10:59 amSo here's the plan:
I'm going to expand and revise Blood Rose. Tone down some of the sex, turn up the murders, suspense and weird shit. I'm aiming for something like Justine Musk or Caitlin Kiernan. The tough part will be determining which of the sex scenes must stay, and which must go. I spent so much time cramming in sex and making sure it was relevant to the plot, it's going to be a pain excising them!
I've spent the last few months fussing over what exactly I want to write, the path I want my career to take. And while paranormals are a great money-maker, I've given it my best shot, and if I put any more effort into it, I'll cram myself into a distinctly not-me shaped box. In receiving a response from Loose-id, I had three options 1) acceptance 2) rejection and 3) conditional acceptance. I'm glad I got the third, since with the first, I'd leap ecstatically into that box, and with the second, I'd mope for a while and go on to do what I'm doing now. But with the third, I got validation and a chance to look at myself in a hard light. I get to choose my own path. I now know I may well have that elusive, golden quality: "something different and cool."
So I'll put the emphasis on death and terror, intrigue and redemption. I won't feel bad about coercing my characters into committing mostly cold-blooded murder, and I'll write a story I'll love even more than what I've got now. And it'll have a happy ending. :-)
