Jan. 4th, 2002 06:22 pmMy Dad amused and frustrated me today by striking up a conversation inquiring if one of my friends, who he knows to be a lesbian, might ever get married. The question confused me, and I told him not unless she want to move to New Hampshire or Nova Scotia or Amsterdam. This confused him, and I explained, rather patronizingly, that she was a lesbian, and lesbians can’t get married. This confused him even more, and it turns out he was asking if she’d ever marry a MAN. He said there were lots of advantages to marrying a man, like having kids. Now I didn’t think my dad was this stupid. No I’m making a lot of assumptions about my dad’s words here, but he has said that “he and I have a different view of homosexuality.” In other words, my dad will love me, but his Catholic mindset knows I’m wrong. He also says that people change. Now I’m pretty sure that I’ll never not be attracted to both men and women. He seems to think my last girlfriend was a youthful phase. The sad part is, in a way, it is. Since I am interested in a lifetime monogamous relationship, if I end up with a guy, then that’s how it will seem. And I’m not about to get together specifically with a girl just to spite my parents.
It just bugs me that my dad seems to think that lesbians can’t have a perfectly normal family life.
