Jonathan McCalmonthas some interesting things to say about providing room for the reader to relate to characters. He's reviewing Scott Bakker's book, "Neuropath," which I haven't read, but no matter how good or bad the book is, McDermott has to win some points by calling a book a "Platonic dialogue with cum-shots." (I think it's a great review, btw, that manages to both praise and trash the book in question.)

"Combat Barbie" aims for Miss England. I think a soldier aiming to be Miss England is great, but does anyone else find "Combat Barbie" a bit insulting? Barbie supposedly shows girls the wide variety of things you can do with your life. (We've got Graduate Barbies at our local grocery store right now.) But Barbies also come with the inherent problem that no matter what you put her in- fatigues, cap and gown or Oscar del la Renta, she's still just a vacuous, grinning, painted plastic face. I'd like to think L/Cpl Hodge has more to her than that. From BBC
