Watched Rent last night over at hawkdancer's place. I understand why people make such a big deal about it, and the music's great, some of the messages are great (live life, AIDS sucks, be yourself), but wow, can we say, self-centered?
It's about this group of parasitic friends who want to live in this huge apartment rent-free and get all pissy when their landlord tells them they can't. They also do some protesting, but that's mostly just because one of them is a self-absorbed drama queen.
Yeah, what Jesse said. :-) One of them gets a job and worries about selling out. Their ultimate solution to not having money is to rewire the city ATMs so that when they punch in the name of their dead-from-AIDS friend, it gives them free money.
But having free rent doesn't mean you shouldn't have a job or think about being connected to the rest of the world, rather than living in a hermetically sealed fantasy land where food magically appears and you can kill dogs for extra cash. And try to have sex with people when you know you have AIDS!

I love it for the music and the decent messages.
