Just got back from The Golden Compass. I wasn't impressed. The acting and/or dialogue was lousy, and they stripped out a lot of the complications I loved, like in the first scene, where I wasn't sure who was a bad guy. In the movie, you know exactly who's the bad guy. They left one revelation that came early in the book to drown in cliche at the climax.
It might have worked as a mini-series, but two hours wasn't enough time.

Thanks for verifying that, because I've been wondering if I should go see it or not... your review sounds a lot like what I had a feeling would happen the moment I heard they were making a movie.

If I can add to [livejournal.com profile] criada's review a bit - I think there was some visually stunning stuff in it, and given a better script, the actors wouldn't have been bad. But the plot exposition is just thrust at you, the nuances are all lost, and most sadly, those very important shades-of-grey (who's really the bad guy?) are nowhere to be found.

If you see it, pay for a matinée and go for the effects.
