I just finished Perdido Street Station. I was told that the end was heartbreaking, so I was ready for it, I thought. I love heartbreaking, if it's done well. Something unpleasant happened, something fairly predictable. I was, "eh, that's pretty damn sad, but, eh. I guess I'm less sensitive than most." Then... one final thing happened, and my heart broke. :-(
It was a "damn you for thinking you're doing the right thing!" moment. Fortunately, I got what I wanted out of it-- a strong character. I mean, what's the point of tormenting characters if they don't grow? Torture for the sake of torture --that's when I feel like an author is pulling the kitten-killing, cheap emotional strings. ...or whacking off.

Sure, the prose was tangled and full of huge words. Sure, there were places where I skimmed, "blah, blah, the city's nasty, Yag's angsty." But I feel like my mind has just been put through a marvelously unique-shaped wringer, and that's really what I live for.

Today is a cleaning day, but then, I'll start Kafka's Uncle, by Bruce Taylor. We'll make it an all-crazy-spider weekend!
