So after reading The Moon and the Sun, I wanted to come down slow. So I picked up Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven, knowing it would be satisfying. And indeed, totally different book, but so damn awesome. Right now I'm reading Lore of the Witch World, by Andre Norton, and then I'll move on to CJ Cherryh. I'm probably an idiot, but the first (rambling) sentences of her book freak me out, so I'm building the courage to read more.
Some of the sentences in Norton's writing bug me, too. I think she's going for an old-fashioned feel, but it reads odd. "Good use did Dairine make of it, too." But otherwise I certainly can't complain. :-)
([livejournal.com profile] timata1705, it might be just because the first story opens with dragging a little girl out of a wrecked ship, but it made me think of you, and I think you'd like it. You can't go wrong with Andre Norton.)

Will take note, ready for joining library up at uni. The Lathe of Heaven, I don't think I've read that one. Read Left Hand of Darkness, which is also in the Masterworks set, but not that one. I will add it to my list. Always looking for new stuff to read :)

Left Hand of Darkness rocks. I was lucky to be able to read it in high school (though I'm jealous of a friend of mine who got to take an entire class of LeGuin in high school. I love my town. ) The image of walking across the polar cap, where everything is white has stuck with my like nothing else. It actually inspired the translation of Oxana's name ("the white water at midnight") I think somewhere I use it as a metaphor that no matter where you are, no matter how dark and dismal things are, there is a place where everything is light. Yet, to actually be there can be a bleak and terrifying experience, but a good one to go through.

In regards to Cherryh:

You're not an idiot, because the sentences ARE all amazingly long like that, but it's not obtrusive once you get used to her cadence. The only thing about it that can be off-putting is how long it takes for it to sink in--it's like a sponge absorbing honey. It's delicious and it's rich, but there's so much of it that you're a few chapters in before you really start sucking it all in.
