Spiders are one of the hardest and most frustrating things for me to get pictures of with my dumb little autofocus camera. First it seems easy, since spiders tend to hold still for a bit, hoping you'll go away. But then the camera refuses to focus, and the spider skitters away. The contrast has to be just right for the autofocus to pick it up. Today, however, I got some good ones. The jumping spider photo is one of my best.

THE BUTTERFLIES WANT TO DRINK YOUR TEARS!
The horror starts innocently enough a little under a minute in. You're all, "aw, the butterflies want to make the turtles pretty..." Sure sucks not having eyelids.

As I was returning to my room from my morning bathroom venture, I saw the silhouette of a bird on a power line outside. My brain first said "crow" but then I paused and realized it was positioned more vertically than a crow. So I had a chance to use the binoculars my dad gave me! (He always used to carry around a small pair, to look at birds with.) For once I knew exactly where the binoculars were, and saw that the bird was some kind of crow-sized hawk-like bird. A spin on the internet suggested it was a merlin. It was gone when I went back to double check.

Pictures from the walk to work today. There were hundred of googly eyes scattered in front of a door. What more can be said? After the cut are salmon in Whatcom Creek.

I dug out my camera and loaded it with fresh batteries. Now, my camera's old, but it's got a great optical zoom, and takes great pictures when it's not taking crappy pictures. Of course, it uses SmartMedia cards, which aren't made anymore, and don't come any bigger than 128MB. Mine's 16MB. So yeah, I can take 12 pics and then I'm done.

I've got a rock on my desk. I got it at Ruby Beach, and it smells like the sea. It's black and the size and shape of a finger. Black, shiny bits poke out like knuckles above the a softer, dark gray matrix. The matrix holds the smell, even after all these months. I'm writing about the sea right now, so I like to sniff the rock. Don't know how to describe it, though.
